San Mateo County Times Interview, 08/16/99
Plastic surgery is more than cosmetic change
Dr. James Pertsch likes to help people look better and feel better. Pertsch, 44, is a San Mateo plastic surgeon who does it all, from breast augmentation to liposuction to facelifts. He recently spoke with staff writer Tyler Cunningham about his profession.
Q. How did you decide on a career in plastic surgery?
A: I decided my senior year of high school . I had a best friend whose mother directed a volunteer program in an emergency department, so I wound up getting roped into volunteering there. Seeing all the different specialties come through, I was most attracted to the plastic sugeon’s attention to every little detail. I found long ago that what I really enjoy doing best is to make people feel better about themselves, rather than just eke out another month of existence. couldn’t sit stil long enough to take the more practical route of psychiatrist, so I wound up in plastic surgery.
