Arms perform a lot of important functions, from writing to eating to communicating. Even though our arms are in near-constant motion, they can accumulate fat and excess skin. Loose and sagging arm skin is particularly prominent after losing lots of weight, which can appear unsightly and get in the way. Brachioplasties are surgical procedures that reshape and provide contouring to the upper arms.
What is a Brachioplasty?
Also known as an arm lift, a brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that treats sagging underarms by reducing extra skin, removing extra fat and tightening and smoothing tissue. This can make the upper arms (from the elbow to the armpit) look more toned and defined.
Aging and genetics both play a significant role in the development of loose, sagging skin. Excess arm skin is a common side effect of weight loss, especially if the weight loss was significant.
How does a Brachioplasty help?
Brachioplasties can significantly alter the appearance of the arms. They can address external signs of aging and contour the effects of loose skin after weight loss. They also provide the following benefits:
- Reduces the appearance of loose skin
- Removes excess bags from under the arms
- Provides a more natural appearance to the arms after weight loss, eliminating ‘bat-wings’
- Provides a confidence boost so you can wear short-sleeved shirts without worry or embarrassment
- Gets rid of excess, sagging skin and fat from the elbow to the armpit
How long does it take to recover from a Brachioplasty?
Brachioplasties are performed in an operating room under general anesthesia. The plastic surgeon will remove some fat and an elliptical segment of skin from the inner back side of the arm (near the tricep). If there’s a lot of excess skin, the surgeon may take some from the very top of the arm, into the armpit area and, in some cases, possibly extend to the chest.
The procedure takes two to three hours to perform, depending on the amount of skin being removed. Afterward, the plastic surgeon may provide a compression garment to help control swelling. In most cases, light activity can be resumed within a few days, while participation in strenuous activities is usually permitted after three or four weeks. This provides the skin enough time to properly heal and minimizes the risk of complications or unwanted side effects.
