Breasts are normally asymmetrical. Typically there are small variations in nipple/areolar size and position, breast shape, chest volume differences, rib cage and chest muscle development asymmetries, and different level of inframammary folds. Breasts are “sisters, not twins” with or without surgery.

Dr. Pertsch has never yet examined breasts, with or without surgery, that are perfectly symmetrical. They are always a little different from side to side.

Troublesome asymmetry that alters clothing or bathing suit selection or affects social interactions in or out of clothes should be evaluated for potential improvement. If you find yourself frequently ruminating in front of a mirror or avoid being seen undressed, a consultation is appropriate.

Asymmetry Treatment

The goal is to create breasts that are reasonably symmetrical so that any residual asymmetries are so minor as to be a “non-issue” and make the breast issue “go away.” Troublesome asymmetry can often be improved using a variety of techniques, often slightly different on each side.

Asymmetry where each augmented breast judged by itself is a near-perfect wonder but are a significant mismatch together is the most troublesome to treat. Sometimes it is best to accept the asymmetry rather that compromise one or both breasts.

If one breast is acceptable, then whatever is necessary for improvement of the other is selected: change implant volume, breast volume, fold position, nipple areolar, lift, etc.

It is more challenging to operate on only one breast and try to match the other. This is a good reason to choose an experienced, detail-oriented expert as your surgeon.

If both breasts are not acceptable, then surgery on both breasts offers the best chance to improve appearance and symmetry now and in the future. Change in implant volume or projection, or lift/reduction to adjust native breast volume, fold position, nipple areolar size and position can be done differentially for improvement.

If significant differences in native breast tissue are an issue, then a reduction of one or both breasts may help. Similar native tissue volumes may age more similarly, lessening chances of future asymmetry.

Although breasts are “sisters, not twins,” with careful planning, painstaking attention to every detail during surgery can achieve more beautiful, youthful, and reasonably symmetrical breasts.
